Incentives for PhD holders

The Government is studying the possibility of sponsoring PhD holders for post-doctoral studies in biotechnology and other specific areas in leading institutions overseas. This is in line with Malaysia?s ambition in the biotechnology field and its desire to move up the technology ladder. More than 3,000 PhD holders will benefit from this move.

According to Datuk Dr Jamaludin Jarjis, the Minister to Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, plans to set up twinning programmes with laboratories employing Malaysians with the expertise the country needs and intensive collaboration with foreign scientists will be submitted to the Cabinet next month by the Ministry.

Incentives would be offered to Malaysian scientists overseas to come home. The priority, however, is to mine the expertise of Malaysians wherever they are.

Under this ?brain gain? programme which was announced by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on April 30, the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry will be developing further the Government?s keenness to collaborate with Malaysians and foreigners interested in sharing their expertise and skills in the biotechnology field.
